Namonamah,
What follows are views that may not reflect the views of JeevanVidyaMission. Worst, they might not even reflect the views of the author. However, they are views nonetheless!
The JV website has the following to say about VishwaPraarthanaa:
"Universal prayer is a Zero cost, result oriented solution for all problems including, health, wealth, emotional, family, social, inter-personal, job-related, national, global and environmental problems."
My questions:
1. Who does the VishwaPraarthanaa benefit? Only the one who chants or even others? (as in "sarvaannaa"). Or is it that by wishing for all, only the one who prays benefits? Ideally one person's chant should benefit all.
2. When does it benefit? Is there a timeframe for its effect to be seen? Is there a point beyond which its effect will fade away if not kept up through continuous VishwaPraarthanaa?
3. Which is the most important word in VishwaPraarthanaa?
My answers: 1. Only the one who chants benefits directly. But to benefit himself/herself, the one who chants must necessarily believe that his/her prayer is for the benefit of all. Also, as part of the benefit one receives "chaanglee buddhee" which provides impetus to reach out to others and pass on the benefits to them. "jyot se jyot ...". This would be a slow process, an evolution. But by induction, it benefits all. Drawing (incorrectly) from school -physics, VishwaPraarthanaa benefits the self by conduction, the ones close by through convection and everybody else through radiation.
2. Initially one chants VishwaPraarthanaa as a ritual, by rote. At a certain point the chant finds the mind echoing it and before you know it, the tables are turned! Now your mind chants it and your mouth just echoes it! At this point, you are oblivious of whether you are chanting or not, your life-pulse itself is a continuous chant. Your thought and actions are no longer directed to your own benefit, but to the benefit of all. At this point the benefit to you begins. How long does this effect last? This hard-earned success is achieved not as a single bounty. You keep on receiving it in some measure continuously. However, if you do not keep sa.n.yam (which though a part of chaanglee buddhee is not explicitly mentioned in VishwaPraarthanaa), you will want more than what you receive. And an untrue feeling will set in that the effect of VishwaPraarthanaa is withering away. This will cause an inner reluctance in your life-pulse: it will no longer chant VishwaPraarthanaa. The reverse cycle, the vicious circle, will set in. You will still chant the VishwaPraarthanaa, but now it will be only from the lips. You will have to start the process all over again.
So, 3. The most important word in VishwaPraarthanaa is sa.n.yam.
