This is my guess (not knowledge) of JV's views on this: Replace it with medical tests and compatibility tests.

In any case, the parents' role in such affairs is decreasing. So, the question itself will become irrelevant  after a few years. (I have been hearing this for the past few decades!)

सर्वांना नमस्कार,

ज्योतिष शास्त्र हे जरी शास्त्र असले तरी ते जाणणारे फार थोडे आहेत.  पैशासाठी सांगणारे खूप आहेत.  मात्र लोकांच्या हितासाठीच फक्त वापर करणारे, तसेच पैसे देऊ केले तरी न घेणारे, मुख्य म्हणजे वर्षानुवर्षे नामस्मरण करणारे ज्योतिषी हाताच्या बोटावर मोजता येतील इतकेच आहेत.

ज्योतिषशास्त्रात पर्मिटेशन / कॉम्बिनेशन खूप असतात.  त्यामुळे कुठल्या ग्रहाला अथवा कुठल्या ग्रहस्थितीला जास्त महत्व द्यावयाचे हे जाणवणे महत्वाचे असते.  हे जाणवणे हे त्या ज्योतिषाच्या उपासनेवर अवलंबून असते हेच कित्येकांना माहित नसते.  इतकेच काय अनेक ज्योतिषांनाही ते माहित नसते.

ज्योतिषशास्त्राचा एक महत्वाचा सिध्दांत आहे.  तो म्हणजे मानवाला उपासनेद्वारे ९० टक्के पर्यंत त्याचे भविष्य बदलता येऊ शकते.  १० टक्के अटळ योग असतात.  पण साधारणत: कोणताही ज्योतिषी ज्योतिषशास्त्राचा हा महत्वाचा सिध्दांत जातकाला सांगत नाही.

ज्योतिषशास्त्राचा आणखी एक नियम आहे.  तो म्हणजे जेव्हा भविष्य वर्तवले जाते तेव्हाच त्याची फलनिष्पतीचे प्रमाण कमी होते.  यासाठी जातकाने काय करायचे हे सांगायचे पण त्याचे फळ मात्र सांगायचे नाही हा ज्योतिषशास्त्राचा एक महत्वाचा नियम आहे.  बरेच ज्योतोषी हा नियम पाळत नाहीत.  तसेच फळ सांगितले नाही तर जातक उपासना करायला तयार होत नाही म्हणून फळ सांगायला लागते असाही प्रकार होऊ शकतो.

असे म्हटले जाते की, नामस्मरण करणार्‍याला ज्योतिषाची जरुरी भासत नाही.  पण जे नामस्मरण करत नाहीत त्यांना मात्र ग्रहतार्‍यांनी आखून दिलेल्या मार्गावरूनच जावे लागते.

ज्योतिषशास्त्र हे निरिक्षण व अनुमान यावर आधारलेले आहे.  प्रत्यक्षात ग्रह काही करत नाहीत.  "एखाद्या पदार्थात मीठ घातले तर तो पदार्थ खारट होतो" हे जसे निरिक्षण व अनुमान या दोन्हींच्या सहाय्याने आपण ठरवितो अगदी त्याचप्रमाणे हे शास्त्र बनलेले आहे.  पूर्वी अमूक अमूक अशी ग्रह स्थिती असताना अमूक अमूक असे घडले होते हे निरिक्षण कोणीतरी केलेले असते व त्यावरून अनुमाने केलेली असतात.  ही अनुमाने हाच ज्योतिषशास्त्राचा आधार होय.  तसेच अमुक एक उपासना केल्यावर अमूक अमूक हे फळ मिळते या निरिक्षणांवर आधारीत उपाययोजना अशी ही पध्दत असते.

ज्योतिषशास्त्रावर एक मोठी मर्यादा आहे.  ती म्हणजे काय घडेल हे जरी सांगता आले तरी त्याचा परिणाम काय असेल हे सांगता येत नाही.  ही मर्यादा सांगण्यासाठी तसेच नामस्मरण करणार्‍यांसाठी ज्योतिषाची जरुरी नसते हे स्पष्ट करण्यासाठी एक उदाहरण देतो.

ब्रह्मचैतन्य गोंदवलेकर महाराजांकडे एक ज्योतिषी आले.  प्रचंड अभ्यास व व्यासंग होता.  हे ज्योतिषी आल्याबरोबर त्यांच्या भोवती लोकांचा गराडा पडला.  ४-५ दिवस असे चालू होते.  नामस्मरणावर विश्वास ठेवण्याऐवजी लोक भविष्यावरच विश्वास ठेवायला लागलेत हे गोंदवलेकर महाराजांच्या लक्षात आले.  त्यानंतरच्या दिवशी सकाळी हे ज्योतिषी महाराजांच्या दर्शनाला आले असता महाराज त्यांना म्हणाले.

महाराज : बरे झाले तुम्ही आलात.  एक पत्रिका तुम्हाला दाखवावयाची होती.  पण तुम्हाला मोकळा वेळच मिळत नाही म्हणून थांबलो होतो.
ज्योतिषी : महाराज तुमचे काही काम आहे हेच मला माहित नव्हते नाहीतर तुमचेच काम मी प्रथम केले असते.  द्या ती पत्रिका मला.  लागलीच बघून टाकतो.

(महाराजांनी गादीखालून एक पत्रिका काढून दिली.  ज्योतिषाने ती पाहायला सुरवात केली.  जसजशी ती पत्रिका तो पाहात होता तसतसा त्याचा चेहरा गंभीर होऊ लागला.)

ज्योतिषी : फारच खराब पत्रिका आहे ही.  याला अगदी लहानपणापासून त्रास आहे.
महाराज : हं
ज्योतिषी : अन्नान्न दशा याच्या अगदी पाचवीलाच पूजली आहे.  कोणी वाढले तरच याला जेवायला मिळेल.
महाराज : हं
ज्योतिषी : आई वडिलांचे सुखही नाही.
महाराज : हं
ज्योतिषी : फारच खडतर आयुष्य.  लग्न होईल पण संसार सुख नाही.  मुले होतील पण अल्पायुषी निपजतील.  अरेरे द्विभार्या योग आहे.  पण दुसर्‍या बायकोकडूनही संसार सुख नाहीच.
महाराज :  हं
ज्योतिषी : असलेली इस्टेट पण जाईल याची.  चोर दरवडेखोर यापासून नक्की त्रास आहे.  एखादी इस्टेट अगदी आकाशातून जरी पडली तरी त्याला ती लाभायची नाही.  छे छे फारच खराब पत्रिका.  शेवटपर्यंत अन्नानदशा म्हणजे फारच झाले.  इतकी खराब पत्रिका मी यापूर्वी कधिच पाहिली नव्हती.  कोणाची आहे हो?
महाराज : माझी आहे ती.  अगदी बरोबर भविष्य वर्तवले बघा.  चांगलाच अभ्यास आहे तुमचा.  माझ्या काही शंका आहेत त्या फेडायला तुमच्यासारखाच ज्योतिषी पाहिजे होता.

(खरे म्हणजे महाराजांची पत्रिका आहे हे कळल्यावर ज्योतिषी जरा ओशाळलाच पण तरीही महाराजांच्या शंका निरसन करायची तयारी दर्शवली.  त्याला वाटले यातून बाहेर पडायचा काही मार्ग आहे का ते बघायला सांगतील.)

ज्योतिषी : मी माझ्याकडून जे काय करता येईल ते नक्की करेन.
महाराज : राजे रजवाडे लोक या माणसाकडे आले तर ते या माणसाच्या पाया पडतील असे काही पत्रिकेवरून दिसते आहे का बघा.
ज्योतिषि : नाही तसे काही पत्रिकेवरून सागता येणार नाही
महाराज : बर. असू दे.  मला हे सांगा की, या माणसाची अन्नान दशा असली तरी त्या माणसाच्या इच्छेवरून हजारो माणसे जेवून जातील असे काही सापडते आहे का?
ज्योतिषी : नाही तसे काही सांगता येत नाही.
महाराज : हो का. बर बर.  इस्टेट नाही या माणसाच्या नशिबात, पण याच्या सांगण्यावरून लाखो रुपयांची बांधकामे होतील येवढे तरी दिसतेय का बघा ना पत्रिकेत.
ज्योतिषी : नाही हो असे सांगता येणार.
महाराज : आता कळले का पत्रिकेवरून काय सांगता येत नाही ते.  हे नामस्मरणाचे फळ आहे.  तुम्ही सर्व सांगितले.  अगदी बरोबर सांगितले.  काहीही चूक नाही त्यात.  पण या सर्वांचा काय अपेक्षीत परिणाम होइल हे मात्र तुम्हाला सांगता आले नाही.  याचे कारण माझा रामराया माझ्या बरोबर आहे हे तुम्हाला पत्रिकेवरून पाहाता आले नाही.  हा सर्व नामस्मरणाचा महिमा आहे.
महाराजांकडून त्या ज्योतिषाने अनुग्रह घेतला हे वेगळे सांगायला नकोच.

(गोंदवलेकर महाराजांनी लहानपणीच घर सोडले.  त्यामुळे भिक्षा हेच अन्न मिळवण्याचा मार्ग होता.  पहिली बायको व दोन मुले निर्वतली.  दुसरी बायको आंधळी होती पण त्यांनीच ती स्वत:हून निवडली होती.  ती एक अधिकारी स्त्री होती.  आईचा जीव इस्टेटीत गुंतला आहे हे लक्षात आल्यावर ती सर्व लोकांकडून लुटवली.  कोर्टात एक केस होती.  ती जिंकल्यामुळे काही जमीन यांच्या नावावर झाली.  पण लागलीच एक बक्षीसपत्र करून ती जागा त्यांनी एका संस्थेला दान करून टाकली.  शेवटपर्यंत त्यांच्या नावावर काहीही नव्हते.)

ज्योतिष् ही एक ज्ञानशाखा होऊ शकते, पण यापावेतो तरी ते विज्ञान नाही कारण या ज्ञानशाखेकडे वैज्ञानिक दृष्टीने बघायचा प्रघात नाही.  आतील लोक बाहेरची फूटपट्टी वापरू देत नाहीत, बाहेरचे लोक आतल्या विलक्षण फूटपट्ट्या वापरायला सरावलेले नाहीत व तशी त्यांची मानसिक तयारीही नाही. काही लोक दोन्ही ठिकाणी तन्मयतेने वावरतात पण ते आत असताना फक्त आतले व बाहेर आसतांना केवळ बाहेरचे असतात.... दोन्हींची सरमिसळ ते टाळतात (येथे "दुटप्पी" हा अर्थ अपेक्षित नाही).

कोणाला जर भूत-भविष्य सांगता येत असेल तर ते अखंड नामस्मरणाप्रमाणेच अपवाद, चमत्कार वा सिद्धी समजणे, त्याचा आदर करणे व सोडून देणे हे केव्हाही बरे. ते वंदनीय असेलही, पण वांच्छनीय वा अनुकरणीय नक्कीच नव्हे. JVच्या "तूच....शिल्पकार"शी ते विसंगतही आहे.

I am sorry that what you quote as fact is not so. It is an attempt by someone to make fun of us Indians who believe the western man than ourselves. Lord Macaulay was not known to have high regard for the Indian culture or for the Indian people. He was of the view that the British Empire was for the benefit of the Indian people in both material and spiritual ways.

I have had many occasions to respond to friends who have sent me the quote you have used. That quote has no basis. A cursory search on the internet would convince you that the quote is a fraud. There are also sites on the web where you will be able to get hold of Macaulay's writings, and his speeches to the Parliament. Of course, the official text of speeches in the British Parliament are also available on the net. In fact the date coincides with the date of Macaulay's famous Minute on Education. I quote from there:

दोघांना नामस्मरणाची आवड असेल, पण त्याला ती आवडत नसेल व तिला तो आवडत नसेल तर किती compatibility असेल?

Even if there is incompatibility, should it matter? Both could be non-rigid and accommodating.
